'Lucia di Lammermoor' was one of the biggest triumphs of Donizetti's career, and remains as his outstanding masterpiece. The libretto was written by Salvatore Cammarano based on Sir Walter Scott's novel 'The Bride of Lammermoor'. The story runs as follows. Lord Enrico Ashton is outraged to find that his sister Lucia is in love with his mortal enemy, Edgardo. He tricks Lucia into believing Edgardo unfaithful and insists she marry Lord Arturo Bucklaw. The wedding takes place, disrupted by Edgardo, who curses Lucia. Lucia begins to lose her mind, and when Enrico challenges Edgardo to a duel, Lucia kills Arturo, then collapses and dies herself. On hearing the tragic news, Edgardo kills himself. This is the Schirmer edition on the Vocal Score and contains an English version by Natasha Macfarren, as well as an essay by E. Irenaeus Stevenson.
